This summer, several large sheep sculptures will be let loose across Kirklees, each transmitting its own unique soundscape made up of local sounds and music! A major event as part of Kirklees Year of Music, HERD is devised by composer Orlando Gough and produced by Artichoke. Yorkshire Sound Women Network and its local group YSWN Huddersfield Makers are working with sound artist Jo Kennedy through the spring to create one of the sheep soundscapes. Following our introductory field recording workshop in February we’re offering a free workshop for women and minority gender people introducing how to make soundscapes in a Digital Audio Workstation. In the group session, we will work collectively to craft a soundscape using pre-recorded field-recordings and foley sounds. Working to the brief set out in the HERD project, we will focus on creating a soundscape evoking present-day Kirklees, filled with the sounds of technology and busy everyday life. We will be using Logic Pro X but the technical and creative methods covered are applicable in any Digital Audio Workstation. During the process of building the soundscape we will explore clean-up and editing of sounds, compositional choices about which sounds to place where, creative use of EQ and other processing and effects, and automation of volume and other parameters. Workshop leader: Jo Kennedy Participant age: 16+, or 11+ with full participation of a guardian (Please make two separate Eventbrite bookings so we have the correct details). Experience needed: None Equipment: All equipment will be provided but bring pens/paper or other note-taking items if you like. Access info: Dai Hall has step-free access to the main space but unfortunately not the toilets, which are in the basement. Accessible toilets are available approximately 200m away in Kingsgate Shopping Centre. Please get in touch by emailing hudds.yswn@gmail.com if you have any access requirements that would make it easier for you to enjoy this event.
